Sapareva Banya is a small town in the foot of the highest Bulgarian mountain – Rila. The drive from Sofia is along a new highway and takes a little over 1 hour. Sapareva Banya has a convenient location, so enjoying SPA there can also be combined with a hike to the Seven Rila Lakes (link to the itinerary from Nature Exploration section) or a visit to the famous Rila Monastery (link to the itinerary from Top Sights section).
In the centre of the town there is the main thermal spring which is a natural geyser with a temperature of 103°C. The hot water erupts every few seconds from over 70 metres below the surface. It goes up like a fountain to around 18 metres. The slightly mineralized, sulphate-hydrocarbonate, hyperthermal water is especially useful for treating diseases of the locomotor system, the peripheral nervous system, damage to the central nervous system, gynaecological diseases, skin conditions (especially psoriasis), diseases of the upper respiratory tract and others.
